USS Appleton NCC-97001
The USS Appleton is an Odyssey class deep space science and exploration cruiser. Bigger than a Galaxy or Sovereign class, this mammoth vessel is perfectly built for venturing into the deep unknown regions of space, while also fending off threats from any who would threaten the peace of the Federation.
First seen in Star Trek Online, the Odyssey class retains the familiar primary and secondary hull configuration of previous deep space cruisers dating all the way back to the Constitution class of the original USS Enterprise NCC-1701. The connecting dorsal has been split, however, forming curved twin necks connecting the two hulls, keeping the ship’s profile sleek and graceful, whilst still maintaining a strong and sturdy frame that holds up against whatever onslaught is put upon it.
With the recent series of Star Trek: Picard, the Odyssey class was finally seen on-screen (and canonised!) in the form of the soon-to-be decommissioned USS Enterprise NCC-1701-F. Given that the mammoth vessel could barely have been even twenty years old at this point, you would’ve hoped that such a modern vessel would be designed and built to last a lot longer. Of course, storytelling needed to make way for the rechristening of the USS Titan NCC-80102-A to become the new Enterprise-G under the command of Captain Seven of Nine. Otherwise, I’d have though Enterprise, Odyssey and Appleton would all be lasting for a good few decades more!
Appleton was named for Bradfordian physicist Edward Victor Appleton, and you can read more about him elsewhere on this website. Just follow the links at the bottom of the page.
