CAPT Andy “Doc” Walker, SFMD
Captain Walker is a life-long Star Trek fan, and a member of STARFLEET since stardate 201705.07. He has been extremely lucky to rise quickly through the ranks. He started out as an Ensign and Chief of Communications on board the Space Station Independent, producing the bi-monthly Rogue Tribble publication for the crew, before rising to the rank of Lieutenant, transferring ships and becoming Chief Medical Officer on board Appleton.
On stardate 202004.21, as a newly minted Lieutenant Commander, he was appointed Assistant Surgeon General for STARFLEET Medical in Region 20, succeeding CAPT Mark Logan, the outgoing ASG who had become Surgeon General for all of STARFLEET. Andy held the position until 2023.
Stardate 202107.25 Andy was promoted Commander and became XO of the Appleton, supporting FCAPT Erica Smith in her duties as CO. Erica shortly announced her decision to step down as CO (although remaining an active member of the Appleton’s command crew as special advisor) and Andy has now taken up that mantle.
By day, Andy is a customer care coordinator for the UK branch of a multi-national manufacturing business, formerly a kitchen/bathroom/bedroom designer for a major DIY retailer. In his spare time enjoys watching Star Trek (obviously!) among other sci-fi and horror shows and movies, building Lego, listening to heavy metal, and taking long walks that usually end up in a pub. He has recently discovered the joy of indoor bouldering. He is an avid reader and part-time writer, again in the sci-fi and horror genres. For five years he was Secretary of the British Fantasy Society, a group for writers, artists, editors, publishers and fans of genre fiction in the UK, and the organisers of the annual British Fantasy Awards, of which he himself was a recipient of the Karl Edward Wagner Award in 2017 for his services as a “RedCloak” event volunteer. In 2019, he chaired FantasyCon, the annual convention of the BFS, taking it to Glasgow, the first time it had been out of England in decades, one of his proudest achievements to date.
Andy now looks to new horizons, stepping into the role of Appleton’s CO is going to be a challenge, but one to which Andy is fully prepared to step up. Erica has laid a lot of great groundwork on Appleton, building the ship and its crew over the last five years. Andy is very much looking forward to taking Appleton on to new heights, in the true spirit of Appleton’s motto: “Rise to High Places.”
